Cannabis for Sleep: What Actually Works and Why

Sleep disorders affect an estimated 50–70 million Americans, and many are turning to cannabis as an alternative to prescription sleep aids. But not all cannabis is created equal when it comes to sleep — and the wrong strain or format can actually make sleep worse. Here’s what the research says and what actually works.

How Cannabis Affects Sleep

Cannabis interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in regulating sleep cycles. THC has been shown to reduce the time it takes to fall asleep and increase deep sleep (slow-wave sleep) in the short term. However, THC also suppresses REM sleep — the stage associated with dreaming and memory consolidation — which is why some regular cannabis users report vivid dreams when they stop using it (REM rebound).

CBD, on the other hand, appears to have a more nuanced relationship with sleep. At lower doses, CBD may actually promote wakefulness. At higher doses, it may help reduce anxiety and pain that interfere with sleep, indirectly improving sleep quality.

The Best Cannabis Formats for Sleep

The format you choose matters as much as the strain. For sleep, consider:

  • Edibles — The longer duration of edibles (4–8 hours) makes them well-suited for sleep. A low-dose edible (5–10mg THC) taken 1–2 hours before bed can help you fall asleep and stay asleep through the night.
  • Tinctures — Sublingual tinctures offer faster onset than edibles (15–45 minutes) with a moderate duration. Good for those who go to bed within an hour of dosing.
  • Flower/Vape — Fast-acting but shorter duration (1–3 hours). Better for falling asleep than staying asleep.

Strains and Terpenes for Sleep

Look for strains high in the following terpenes, which are associated with sedation and relaxation:

  • Myrcene — The most common terpene in cannabis, associated with sedative effects. Strains high in myrcene include many indica-dominant varieties.
  • Linalool — Also found in lavender, linalool has well-documented calming and sleep-promoting properties.
  • Caryophyllene — Anti-inflammatory and anxiolytic properties may help reduce the physical and mental tension that interferes with sleep.

CBN: The “Sleep Cannabinoid”

CBN (cannabinol) is a mildly psychoactive cannabinoid that forms as THC ages and oxidizes. It’s often marketed as a sleep aid, and while the research is still emerging, many consumers report that CBN-rich products produce more pronounced sedative effects. Look for products specifically formulated with CBN if sleep is your primary goal.

Important Caveats

Cannabis can be an effective short-term sleep aid, but regular nightly use can lead to tolerance, meaning you may need increasing amounts to achieve the same effect. It can also affect sleep architecture over time. If you’re using cannabis for sleep regularly, consider taking occasional breaks and addressing any underlying sleep issues with a healthcare provider.
