Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people turn to cannabis. In surveys of cannabis consumers, anxiety relief consistently ranks among the top three reported reasons for use. But the relationship between cannabis and anxiety is more nuanced than a simple “it helps” or “it hurts.” Here’s what the research actually shows.
The Biphasic Effect: Dose Matters More Than Anything
Cannabis has what researchers call a biphasic effect on anxiety — meaning low doses tend to reduce anxiety, while high doses can increase it. This is one of the most consistent findings in cannabis research and explains why some people swear by cannabis for anxiety while others say it makes their anxiety worse. Both experiences are valid — they’re often just the result of different doses.
A 2017 study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders found that low doses of cannabis (less than 10mg THC) significantly reduced anxiety, stress, and depression ratings, while higher doses had less consistent effects and in some cases increased anxiety.
CBD vs. THC for Anxiety
CBD (cannabidiol) has the strongest research support for anxiety relief among cannabis compounds. Multiple clinical trials have found CBD effective for social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety, and PTSD-related anxiety. Unlike THC, CBD does not produce psychoactive effects and does not carry the risk of dose-dependent anxiety increase.
THC can reduce anxiety at low doses but increases anxiety at high doses, particularly in people who are already prone to anxiety or who are new to cannabis. For anxiety-prone individuals, products with a balanced THC:CBD ratio (1:1 or 2:1) or CBD-dominant products are generally a safer starting point than high-THC options.
Terpenes for Anxiety Relief
Beyond cannabinoids, certain terpenes have well-documented anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) properties:
- Linalool — Also found in lavender, linalool has been shown to reduce anxiety in multiple studies. Look for strains with a floral, lavender-like aroma.
- Caryophyllene — This terpene binds to CB2 receptors and has shown anti-anxiety effects in preclinical research. It has a spicy, peppery aroma.
- Limonene — Associated with elevated mood and stress relief. Found in citrus-scented strains.
What This Means for Choosing a Product
If anxiety relief is your primary goal, consider:
- Starting with a low dose (2.5–5mg THC for edibles, one small puff for flower/vape)
- Choosing products with CBD present alongside THC
- Looking for strains high in linalool, caryophyllene, or limonene
- Avoiding very high-THC products until you know how your body responds
A Note on Long-Term Use
While cannabis can be effective for short-term anxiety relief, regular heavy use has been associated with increased anxiety over time in some individuals, particularly with high-THC products. If you’re using cannabis regularly for anxiety, it’s worth discussing with a healthcare provider and considering whether it’s addressing the root cause or masking it.
